Nova Southeastern University
I have the privilege of working with a lot of Dominican students and their families. A common theme I run into is that parents are reluctant to have their children go away to university. I understand that. It’s a scary step. Most of the parents I talk to want their children to study in the United States but they want them to be nearby.
Nova Southeastern University is the perfect university for these families. It’s in Fort Lauderdale, Florida (about 30 minutes from Miami) so it’s a great location and not just in terms of weather. There are also direct, inexpensive flights from Dominican Republic (I find Punta Cana has to the best prices to Ft. Lauderdale.
Nova Southeastern University has a very solid reputation. It is ranked as one of the top-200 universities in the U.S. (there are over 4,500 universities). In addition, it already has a lot of Dominican students so you should be able to find other students to make mangu and sancocho with.
Although they do not require the SAT for admission, they do require a 79 on the TOEFL. To be considered for admission and scholarships, students must submit (in addition to their TOEFL) their high school transcripts translated to English and a letter of recommendation from a teacher. With a completed application, a student is considered for both admission and scholarships.
The cost of tuition is USD $31,150/year with another additional cost of approximately USD$10,300/year for a dorm room and meal plan. The good news is they have great scholarships. Students can earn scholarships of between USD $5,000-$17,000/year. Great candidates can be considered for the President’s Scholarship, which covers full-tuition.
