In working with Madonna University in Michigan to recruit students in the Dominican Republic, I’m in a unique position because I used to work as an admissions officer for Madonna. This gives me an insider’s view on not just what the school is like, but also in what the admissions office looks for in a prospective student. I have a great relationship with the admissions office and can help work with students that are interested in Madonna University to make sure they put forth their best application for admission.
So what is Madonna University like? Well, Madonna is a small campus in a quiet town about 20 minutes from downtown Detroit. It’s a great location because it’s safe and quiet but Detroit offers plenty to do like Saturday markets, major sporting events, and great concerts.
Madonna is small enough that almost everyone knows each other. I didn’t know every name I’m on campus while working there but I must have seen just about every face. It’s a great atmosphere for students who don’t want to be just a number and who want to feel part of a community.
And for students interested in Madonna, this is a great time to be going as it’s growing and there are seemingly constant new improvements. In the two years I was there, they added eight new sports teams, a outdoor sand volleyball court, built two new dorms, upgraded the dining halls, and brought a Starbucks to campus.
As far as Majors, Madonna offers around 100. There are three that stand out to me as being good options for Dominican students based on careers a lot of students choose here. Dominican Republic has a lot of students that want to study Criminal Justice and Madonna has a great Criminal Justice program. For those students who want to be on the investigations side of Criminal Justice, Madonna is one of only about two dozen accredited Forensic Science programs in North America. They have a crime lab on campus and students have worked with State police to find missing person. Finally, Madonna’s Film program is a hidden gem. They have a full radio and television studio that feature state-of-the-art equipment. Students produce a morning television show in Michigan and seniors make a full-length, feature film every year. Best of all, it’s hands-on. Students do the acting, directing, producing, editing, EVERYTHING. They’ll walk out of Madonna ready to walk onto a TV or movie set.
